Jamal, whose stunts often place him in the limelight, is Sungai Besar Umno division chief.
However, the New Straits Times quoted Selangor Umno information chief Zein Isma Ismail as saying that Jamal had acted in his capacity as chairman of the Malaysian NGOs Coalition.
“Jamal did not do it in the name of Selangor Umno, but under the capacity of the NGOs Coalition.
“It so happens that he is a member of the Selangor Umno liaison committee,” Zein said in the report.
Yesterday, Jamal and his followers had dumped cartons of beer in front of the Selangor state government office, following which he had used a hammer to smash up the bottles.
He reportedly did this to protest against the Better Beer Festival 2017, which was slated to be held at the Publika Shopping Gallery in Kuala Lumpur this month.
The event was cancelled after the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) rejected the organisers’ application to host it.
Jamal’s actions were also condemned by Barisan Nasional (BN) component party MCA, which said he and his followers should be charged with littering, being a public nuisance, attempted vandalism and destruction of public property, criminal intimidation and harassment, and sedition.
Jamal is currently under police investigation for unlawful assembly.
According to Shah Alam district police chief Shafien Mamat, investigations are being carried out under Section 143 of the Penal Code.
If found guilty, Jamal could face a jail sentence of up to six months, a fine, or both.
