PUTRAJAYA: The women, family and community development ministry will issue temporary personal identification cards to former wards of the welfare department’s care centres who have not yet received citizenship.

Its minister, Rohani Karim, said today the card would help them find employment or receive emergency assistance after leaving the welfare centres.

“Previously, the children who left the centres after reaching 18 years of age were only given a supporting letter while waiting for their application for identity cards to be approved,” she said.

She said she would meet with the prime minister and his deputy to discuss the issue before bringing it up to the cabinet.

The temporary identification card will be issued beginning early next month, she added.

Earlier, Rohani had held a two-hour meeting with 26 former charges of the care centres and the transit “Purple Home” to discuss their problems as well as suggestions to assist them.

Purple Home provides temporary accommodation for those who have left the care centres.

“We now have four such centres and plan to open them in every state,” Rohani said.
