Sivanesan and Dr Jeyakumar settle suit out of court

The DAP assemblyman regrets alleging asset declaration was incomplete after the PSM MP files defamation suit against him.

PETALING JAYA: Dr Jeyakumar Devaraj of PSM considers the dispute over his asset declaration with Sungkai assemblyman A Sivanesan of the DAP, resolved.

This follows Sivanesan’s move to withdraw his stand on the matter after the Sungai Siput MP filed a defamation suit against the Perak assemblyman in July.

State DAP chairman Ngeh Koo Ham had arranged a meeting between the two before the case came up for hearing.

Jeyakumar said Sivanesan agreed to a consent judgment that he withdraw his contention that Jeyakumar’s asset declaration on May 17 was incomplete as it did not include the assets gifted by his father and that he regrets making the statement.

“This consent agreement was recorded in the Sessions Court on Aug 7 and the sealed copy was extracted late last week,” Jeyakumar said in a statement today.

“PSM appreciates the role played by YB Ngeh in settling this issue.”

On July 5, Jeyakumar had said his decision to take the matter to court was made after his demand that Sivanesan retract his statement and apologise, fell on deaf ears.

On May 23, his lawyer issued a letter to Sivanesan to retract his statement, which was published in the Tamil Malar news daily.

However, the DAP politician denied he had tarnished Jeyakumar’s image.

Jeyakumar had said PSM made it compulsory for its members who were either assemblymen, MPs or local government councillors to declare their assets annually.

To claim that they did not fully declare their assets, he added, was an attempt to deceive the public.

“Sivanesan’s claim has serious implications and this is why I am forced to file a suit against YB Sivanesan,” he had said then.
