PETALING JAYA: Bicycle-sharing company oBike says it had met with Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) officials prior to the launch of its service.

It said this in the wake of the council’s move to confiscate some 250 oBike bicycles.

Earlier today, MBPJ enforcement officers were reported to have seized the oBike bicycles, saying that they obstructed sidewalks.

Petaling Jaya mayor Mohd Azizi Mohd Zain was quoted by The Star as saying that oBike was an illegal operation in the city and he hoped the company would apply to operate its services there.

oBike clarified that prior to launching the service in Petaling Jaya, it had notified the various stakeholders in MBPJ.

“The discussions focused on the methodology in operations as well as the necessary regulations required for the bike-sharing industry.”

oBike said it was currently in talks with MBPJ to resolve the issue so that people living in PJ can continue using its service.

oBike is a dockless bicycle-sharing service, which allows users to park their bicycles anywhere, oBike Malaysia business development manager Ian Goh told FMT in a recent interview.

He said that by “anywhere”, he meant at the oBike docking stations, motorcycle/bicycle parking lots inside buildings or in open public spaces.

To date, oBike has signed up just over 100,000 users in Malaysia.

Users only need to download the oBike app and pay a one-time refundable deposit of RM49 for adults and RM19 for students, a special price till the end of September.

Thereafter, users will be charged just RM1 for every 15 minutes they use the bicycle.
