Najib’s US trip will be futile, says Pua

The DAP leader says Trump is not in a position to stop any official graft probe.

PETALING JAYA: DAP leader Tony Pua today said Prime Minister Najib Razak’s trip to the White House this month would be futile if his intention was to have the US Department of Justice’s (DoJ) investigation into 1MDB closed.

Pua said the US president has no power to scuttle any investigation.

“Unfortunately, unlike Najib, (Donald) Trump has no such powers in the US. He may be the most powerful person in the world, from the most powerful country, but the US, like it or not, is a country with rule of law, and its institutions are independent,”  Pua told reporters at the Selangor DAP headquarters here today.

He said Trump could not even stop investigations against him.

“How is he going to get investigations against a country with minor political influence like Malaysia covered up?” asked the DAP national publicity secretary.

He said a US president has not power to stop graft investigations or silence any debate on scandals affecting the government.

“Trump cannot do that,” Pua said.

Najib is expected to meet Trump on Sept 12, the first White House trip by the prime minister since the US presidential election in November last year.

The meeting comes in the middle of a criminal investigation by DoJ into allegations that billions of dollars had been siphoned off from 1MDB.

The Wall Street Journal had earlier quoted people close to Najib as saying that he would likely use the White House visit to try and play down the possibility of further investigations into 1MDB.
