PETALING JAYA: DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang is fearful that Najib Razak’s visit to the US next month may prove that the prime minister is not wanted by the US Department of Justice (DoJ) after all.

Minister Salleh Said Keruak said the opposition had been going to town claiming the US was going to arrest Najib over 1MDB.

Writing in his blog today, the communications and multimedia minister said Lim had sent an open letter to all cabinet members yesterday asking to cancel the meeting between Najib and US President Donald Trump on Sept 12.

Lim had claimed the visit would bring more shame to the country as Najib had not cleared himself of allegations of corruption as stated by the DoJ.

The DoJ has claimed that an unnamed Malaysian Official 1 (MO1) had been the recipient of US$731 million (RM3.1 billion at present), allegedly misappropriated from 1MDB.

Salleh said such statements were expected from a political novice but not from someone who boasted of being in politics for more than 50 years.

“The ‘Open Letter’ is an odd experiment by Kit Siang. It is sadly amateurish.

“It is obvious that Kit Siang is audaciously trying to divert the attention from the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) findings regarding the Bank Negara forex scandal of more than 25 years ago, which is very damaging to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad,” said Salleh.

In essence, Salleh said Lim was pointing out that Najib should not visit Trump until he cleared himself of all allegations linked to 1MDB.

“What allegations? The US never made any allegations against Najib.

“It was Mahathir who made those allegations.

“Kit Siang’s statement is devoid of any logic and common sense and is unbecoming of someone who should be a veteran politician,” Salleh said.
