Dr Mahathir: PH presidential council meeting to discuss PKR courting PAS

Pakatan Harapan chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad tight-lipped about PKR's refusal to give up on PAS talks.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad has little to say about PKR continuing to court PAS.

Asked about it last night, Mahathir merely said the issue will be discussed in the next PH presidential council meeting.

This is despite PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali’s declaration that his party’s ongoing efforts to woo PAS have nothing to do with the opposition coalition.

“We will have a presidential council meeting tomorrow (Monday), where we will discuss what is actually happening,” the former prime minister said at a press conference after PPBM’s first ever fundraising dinner here last night.

PKR has been trying to get PAS on its side for more than a year now, to avoid a three-cornered battle in the next general election (GE14).

Some party leaders claim anything other than a straight fight with Barisan Nasional would only end up benefiting the ruling coalition.

But the olive branch PKR extended to PAS has been repeatedly rejected by the Islamic party.

In May this year, PAS’ Syura Council announced its decision to break all ties with PKR, saying the move was necessary in order to defend the party’s Islamic agenda.

The council had also accused PKR of violating the terms of its cooperation with the party, and failing to support its Islamic agenda.
