He said Putrajaya had initiated action against former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his sons only after he left Umno to join the opposition last year.
“We are now seeing action supposedly to combat graft only because of the desire to gain political revenge,” he claimed.
“Mahathir’s sons have had their offices raided. Why investigate them only after Mahathir has become an opposition leader?” he added.
On Aug 8, companies under Mahathir’s sons – Mokhzani, Mukhriz and Mirzan – were raided by officials from the Inland Revenue Board (IRB).
This prompted Mahathir, who is chairman of Pakatan Harapan and PPBM, to say that prime minister Najib Razak and his family should also be subjected to raids by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
Mohamad also said a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on the Memali incident of Nov 1985, which happened under Mahathir’s rule as prime minister, is being considered now although the opposition had asked for it a long time ago.
“Only now are they raising the issue after Dr Mahathir has become part of the opposition. This means that government agencies are being used to fight the enemies of the prime minister and not to fight corruption,” he said in his speech at the Kedah Amanah convention in Alor Setar today.
He said if the government wants to set up a RCI on the tragedy which saw four police officers and 14 villagers being killed, there should also be similar inquiries on alleged problems related to the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) and 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
“The misappropriations in Felda and 1MDB should also be investigated,” he said.
The Persatuan Anak Peneroka Felda Kebangsaan (Anak), an NGO which represents second and third generations of Felda settlers, has called for the formation of a RCI to look into allegations made against Felda.
Its president Mazlan Aliman said it was needed just as another RCI was deemed necessary to investigate Bank Negara Malaysia’s foreign exchange losses of the 80s and 90s. The RCI on BNM’s forex losses began on Aug 21.
On Aug 20, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the government was willing to consider a RCI into the Memali tragedy if any individual, body or political party requested or proposed for it in the interest of the victims.
