Guan Eng: I wouldn’t meet ‘dungu’ Trump even if I could

Penang chief minister says he would not want to risk becoming an idiot like Donald Trump by meeting him and wonders how the leader got elected as US president.

PETALING JAYA: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng yesterday described Donald Trump as a “dungu” (derogatory Malay term for “idiot”), saying he would not agree to meet the US president even if he had the chance to.

He said he did not wish to see Trump because he did not want to risk becoming an idiot like him.

“Look at the United States now. They have someone who is considered to be… This president is a dungu. A dungu president, President Trump,” he said in a video clip that has gone viral.

“There are people who have asked me if I would want to meet President Trump if I had the chance. I said I do not want to.

“By meeting a person like this we ourselves risk becoming stupid,” the DAP secretary-general said.

He claimed that Trump was a racist and did not have respect for education.

“I do not know how he was elected to become president,” Lim added.

It is understood that Lim said this in his speech at an official event to hand over the state government’s monetary contributions to 576 new undergraduates from Seberang Perai, who are registered with tertiary institutions in the country. The event was held at the Dewan Milenium in Kepala Batas.

According to Chinese media Sin Chew Daily, Lim also said although the US was ruled by a “dungu president” it would not collapse easily because it had a strong economic system and technology.

He said this when speaking about the importance of education as the foundation of a country’s development and in determining the fate of a nation.

He said that was why the Penang government was making the effort to channel contributions to help develop education in science and technology.

Meanwhile, a statement from the White House yesterday said Trump planned to meet Prime Minister Najib Razak on Sept 12 at his office in Washington.

It said Trump, who won the US presidential election in Nov last year, looked forward to “discussing ways to strengthen and broaden our bilateral relationship and expand regional cooperation with one of America’s closest partners in Southeast Asia.”

The Wall Street Journal, which first reported on the meeting, said Najib had been eager to emphasise his friendship with Trump at a time of US scrutiny over alleged corruption in the Malaysian administration. It was referring to the Department of Justice’s civil suit to seize assets in the US allegedly bought with money linked to 1MDB.

WSJ also quoted people close to Najib as saying he would likely use the White House visit to try and play down the possibility of further investigations into 1MDB.
