PUTRAJAYA: Former Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) chairman Isa Samad was freed from detention today, after being held in remand for five days for investigations into alleged corruption over a London hotel purchase in 2014.

Isa’s lawyer K Kumaraendran said Registrar of the Subordinates Court Zainal Abidin Kamaruddin released him on a bail of RM150,000 with two sureties today after the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) did not request to extend his remand.

He said Isa may be called back as a witness if anyone was charged in the case.

“He was only called in to assist in the investigation, and was not a suspect,” Kumaraendran said.

About 80 supporters gathered with his wife Bibi Sharliza Mohd Khalid outside the Magistrate’s Court compound here by 9am.

They were seen cheering and chanting “Hidup Tan Sri” (Long live Tan Sri) when Isa arrived at the compound at about 9.50am.

Isa, who is also a former menteri besar for Negeri Sembilan, looked energetic despite being remanded on Aug 16.

He had been arrested the day before at the MACC headquarters here, after going there to give a statement pertaining to the purchase of Park City Hotel, London, by Felda Investment Corporation (FIC), a Felda subsidiary.

The MACC also raided his house last week and his office in the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) where is currently chairman. The raids were part of its probe.

Preliminary investigations by the MACC revealed that FIC was believed to have bought the hotel at a much higher price than the market price, resulting in the company allegedly losing millions of ringgit.

The hotel has 62 rooms and is located at Lexham Gardens within the exclusive district of Kensington and Chelsea.

In June, Isa quit his role as Felda Global Ventures (FGV) chairman and was then appointed acting chairman of SPAD by Prime Minister Najib Razak.

FGV and Felda also came under investigation following allegations made by former FGV president and chief executive officer Zakaria Arshad in June.

On June 21, Isa and Bibi Sharliza, were called in to give their statements to MACC although no details were forthcoming as to why they had been called in.

Besides Isa, his former aide, Zahid Md Arip and former FIC chief executive officer Zaid Abdul Jalil were also called in for investigations over the hotel purchase.
