GEORGE TOWN:
Penang executive councillor Phee Boon Poh was seen entering the office of the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission’s Penang headquarters at Northam Road here this afternoon.

Phee was seen entering the MACC building at 2.45pm with lawyer R S N Rayer.

The office of Phee, the state Environment, Welfare and Caring Society Committee chairman, was earlier raided by the MACC.

Four officers in suits went to his office about 11.40am and came out about 1pm. They were seen leaving holding some documents.

No arrests were made, and an officer said they had just interviewed Phee.

Although the officers did not state the reason for the raid, it is believed to be linked to a case where a factory was found to have flouted environmental regulations.

Today’s raid follows a multi-agency sting on a sawdust factory in Bukit Mertajam, which was found to have flouted many federal regulations yesterday.

The Department of Environment had found that the factory did not have a proper air pollution control system.

It is also learnt that the factory was operating illegally on an agricultural plot of land in Sungai Lembu.

The MACC, Immigration Department and the Environment Department jointly conducted the operation.

Besides the factory, the Seberang Perai Municipal Council’s licensing department, too, was raided by the MACC yesterday. The officers left with heaps of documents.

MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Azam Baki had confirmed the raid yesterday but did not reveal other details.
