The bills are Malaysian Border Security Agency Bill (2017), Prevention of Crime (Amendment) BIll 2017 (POCA), Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Amendment Bill 2017.
The Dewan is currently debating the Merchant Shipping (Amendment) Bill 2017.
The motion requesting for all four bills to be debated, regardless of the time it finishes, was moved by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s department Razali Ibrahim.
The Poca bill is expected to seek the removal of the requirement for detainees to be presented to the inquiry officer for an inquiry. Lawyers for Liberty had said this could see a detainee being detained without trial and the detainee might not be able to prove his innocence in any particular criminal offence.
The Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) (Amendment) Bill 2016 is also expected to create a heated argument among lawmakers as they believe the law will be unfair to the non-converting spouse.
The government has removed the clause preventing unilateral conversion of children, and seen as giving an upper hand to the Muslim convert parent in the case of bitter custody battles.
It has already become a major issue outside the Dewan.
