“I won’t run from my responsibility for as long as the people want me to continue leading the country,” he said when opening an economic forum here.
Najib denied that the Barisan Nasional (BN) government pursued populist policies and was only good at making promises to win votes.
Rather, the BN chairman said, his government was fair and would work to take the country to greater heights.
He cautioned the business community that the opposition’s warning about investments from China and their promise to abolish the Goods and Services Tax (GST) were being exploited for political capital.
This, Najib explained, was because the opposition would not be able to come up with an alternative means to replace the RM41 billion revenue raised from the GST if the tax was scrapped.
“They like to instil fear and spread lies for political reasons. They will not contribute to the well-being of the people and nation.”
Najib, who is also the finance minister, said the government would continue with reforms that had earned the praises of experts around the world.
“The reforms are meant to serve the people and ensure Malaysia is put on the right track to achieve high income status,” he said.
