Its deputy president Salahuddin Ayub said the PH component party’s cooperation with Mahathir was to draw support from the Bumiputera community in the lead-up to the 14th general election (GE14).
“Amanah members are reminded to guard their emotions, especially on internal issues in the party, such as on the differences in opinion within PH that has seen some members being critical of the cooperation with PPBM and issuing statements deriding Dr Mahathir and PPBM president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin,” he said.
“This can upset our cooperation. PH’s main goal is to defeat the Barisan Nasional (BN) federal government,” he said at the Amanah Youth convention attended by about 500 members here today.
Salahuddin, who is also PH vice-president, said he believed Mahathir and Muhyiddin would not desert the coalition.
He said if Mahathir did leave, Amanah would fight him.
“I hereby announce my trust in the leadership of Dr Mahathir and Muhyiddin in PH,” he said. Muhyiddin is deputy president of PH and PPBM.
“This is the time to pool together our potential and strength,” he said.
Last month, Amanah’s Saari Sungib resigned as chairman of the Otai Reformasi 1998 activist group which was formed during the height of the “reformasi” campaign in the late 1990s, after some of its members protested against the appointment of Mahathir as chairman of PH.
Also, Malaysiakini reported that Otai Reformasi secretary Abdul Razak Ismail would be contesting in the next general election under Parti Sosialis Malaysia’s banner due to his disagreement with Mahathir leading the opposition coalition.
Meanwhile, Salahuddin also told youth members not to make PAS an enemy in their efforts to attract more youngsters to the party.
“We are no longer PAS. Throw away the exclusive attitude and stance. The formation of Amanah was due to PAS’ move to cooperate with Umno.
“Let’s be wise as members so that we are respected by the people,” he said.
