Police: Student involvement in crimes in Selangor worrying

Students in Selangor are prone to be involved in criminal cases such as robbery, house break-ins, rape, gangsterism, bullying and secret societies, say police.

KLANG: Violence and criminal cases involving school students in Selangor are worrying despite the downward trend in the number of cases over the past five years.

Selangor Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department chief SAC K Kumaran said most of the students were prone to be involved in robbery, house break-ins, rape, gangsterism, bullying and secret societies.

“There has been a decline in students’ involvement in those crimes with 1,247 cases recorded in 2012; 1,418 (2013); 856 (2014); 558 (2015); a slight increase of 781 cases in 2016; and only 167 cases recorded from January to July this year.

“Although the numbers are pretty low compared to the student population in the state, an in-depth observation is needed to curb such crimes from recurring,” he told reporters after officiating the “Anti-Gangsterism, Bullying and Social Problems” for South Klang district level at SMK Sri Andalas here today.

Kumaran said criminal activities involving the students would continue to spread and have a negative impact for the country if no immediate action was taken by the authorities, schools, parents and society.

“All parties must give serious attention to the problem. We don’t want any more cases like the arrest of students in several schools here, including SMK Sri Andalas, for their (alleged) involvement in ‘Geng 24’, in April,” he added.
