He was referring to the events on Monday, when Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar led his men in signing the anti-corruption pledge before Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, and expressed his hope that the police force achieves zero-corruption status.
He had also said that the police force, through the Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Department, would play a role in ensuring that every police officer and member maintains the highest level of integrity, and that several measures had been taken by the department to monitor corruption in the force.
After signing the pledges, Khalid also held a joint press conference with Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Dzulkifli Ahmad.
Gobind said both enforcement agencies must deal with probes involving police personnel speedily and effectively.
“With respect, the inspector-general of police should first tell us what has become of the probe in ‘Ops Gopi’.
“Both the IGP and MACC chief have a lot of explaining to do.
“On the one hand, the police sign pledges but at the same time there is silence and nothing yet announced about what has become of this major investigation at the heart of Bukit Aman,” the Puchong MP said.
Ops Gopi refers to MACC’s anti-graft crackdown on vice and gambling centres in Melaka which began in May and saw several police personnel being detained.
Gopinathan Krishnan was one of the individuals arrested by MACC. He was investigated as a key “intermediary” in the police protection racket involving gambling dens and prostitution houses in Melaka.
On July 19, MACC denied that it had called off investigations into the issue.
Gobind, who is also DAP national legal bureau chairman, said the police must reassure the public that it would check its own without fear or favour.
“What meaning does a pledge have if one does not act in a manner consistent with it?
“This is a matter of public interest. It is absolutely essential for us to be reassured that there is no reason to doubt officers in the force if we are to have confidence in Bukit Aman,” Gobind said.
