PUTRAJAYA:
Former Road Transport Department (RTD) deputy director-general Yusoff Ayob today pleaded not guilty to driving on an emergency lane here last year.

He changed his plea after the charge was read before magistrate Syahrul Jazly Md Zain.

The RM600 fine paid by Yusoff on July 18 after he pleaded guilty was returned to him.

No bail was offered since this is a summons case.

Yusoff, 58, was accused of driving his vehicle with the registration number BLY68 on the emergency lane at Lingkaran Putrajaya, on Oct 7 last year.

Last week the High Court quashed Yusoff’s earlier plea of guilt and ordered him to be charged before a new magistrate.

Judicial Commissioner Ab Karim Ab Rahman, who used his revisionary powers, also ordered Yusoff to enter his plea personally at the Putrajaya magistrate’s court.

Yusoff’s lawyer Baljit Sidhu today told the court that he would be making a representation to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

Government lawyer Izzat Fauzan said all documents needed by the defence would be supplied for them to make a representation.

Syahrul then fixed Aug 21 for the case to be mentioned.

Outside the court, Baljit said he would study the documents before deciding on the nature of representation.

“A confusion arose last week as Yusoff did not obtain proper legal advice,” he said.

Baljit said his client was now with the Public Service Department (PSD), but that the reason for the transfer last Friday was unknown.

On July 18, Yusoff, who was represented by his special officer, had pleaded guilty and magistrate Nik Isfahanie Tasnim Ab Rahman meted out the fine.

The offence is punishable under Section 119(1)(c) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a fine of up to RM2,000 or imprisonment of up to six months, or both.

RTD prosecuting officer Mohd Hafizuddin Mohd Lutfi prosecuted the case.

Reporters who approached the special officer for details said Yusoff could not be present as he was attending a programme at RTD headquarters.

It was reported today that Yusoff was transferred to the PSD following the traffic offence charge.
