Shazni pleads not guilty to locking EC gate

Magistrate allows Amanah Youth vice-chief bail of RM800 after turning down prosecution’s request for a RM5,000 bond.

PUTRAJAYA: Amanah Youth vice-chief Shazni Munir Mohd Ithnin today pleaded not guilty after being charged for locking the gate at the Elections Commission (EC) headquarters here during a protest last month.

Magistrate Nik Isfahanie Tasnim Wan Ab. Rahman allowed Shazni bail of RM800 with one surety.

Shazni was charged under Section 268 of the Penal Code punishable under Section 290 of the code.

Section 290 concerns disturbing the peace by misbehaving at a public place and carries a fine of not more than RM400.

DPP Izzat Fauzan asked the court to impose a bail of RM5,000 which was opposed by Shazni’s lawyer Syahredzan Johan.

“This is not a serious offence and the maximum fine provided is only RM400, so the RM5,000 sought by the prosecution is disproportionate to the fine.

“Also, Shazni is a political activist and the risk of him absconding is nil. We think a bail of RM500 to RM800 should be sufficient,” Syahredzan said.

After his arrest Shazni had been remanded for four days for investigations.

On May 23, Pakatan Harapan (PH) youth members chained the gate in front of the EC headquarters in protest after the agency’s officials refused to allow them to submit a memorandum to EC chairman Hashim Abdullah.

The memorandum urged the EC to revoke its decision not to distribute copies of the quarterly Supplementary Electoral Rolls to political parties.

The EC announced the decision on April 26 and justified it by saying that the public display of the rolls was sufficient for interested parties to inspect the names of people who had registered to become voters.
