PETALING JAYA:
The DAP has called for the Registrar of Societies (RoS) to resign as he was “unprofessional and had tarnished the good name of his office”.

The party’s national legal bureau chairman Gobind Singh Deo said this in calling out the RoS for his continued lack of notification to DAP over the order to have fresh party polls.

“The DAP did not receive any official notification from the ROS as at 5pm yesterday.

“It appears as if the ROS has no basis to support his decision, nor the basic professional courtesy to write to us officially to communicate that decision to us,” Gobind said over the media statement released by the RoS on July 7, instructing the party to hold fresh elections for its central executive committee.

“Muhammad Razin Abdullah should resign. Malaysia can ill afford to have heads of departments who are unprofessional. Their conduct defines their office and in this case, that conduct has tarnished the good name of the office of the Registrar of Societies.”

Gobind, who is Puchong MP, had previously given an ultimatum to the RoS, issuing a statement on Wednesday, that Razin had 48 hours to send an official notification or face the consequences.

“I ask the RoS to state, if not a letter will be sent. I give the RoS 48 hours.

“If it doesn’t, either by letter or otherwise, respond by end of office hours this Friday, DAP will have no choice but to consider its options to deal with this position.

“We cannot hold a fresh re-election without official communication from the ROS to that effect,” Gobind had said in his last statement.

Conceding that the party will likely have to move forward on the issue regardless of an official notification, Gobind said they will now write to the RoS instead.

“We may now need to move ahead on the basis that the media statement issued by the RoS on Friday, July 7, is the official notification by the RoS to the DAP of his decision. We will write to the ROS on Monday conveying this to him,” he said.

Gobind added that the CEC will meet next Wednesday to decide what needs to be done next.

On July 8, following the media statement issued by the RoS, DAP held a press conference announcing that it will not hold a fresh election, but will seek a meeting with the RoS.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng pointed out that the party had already conducted a re-election in 2013 as directed by the RoS.

Lim added that the party had also informed the RoS of the re-election results, which involved 2,576 qualified delegates.

“Therefore, the question of a fresh election does not arise,” he said, adding that they were still keen to meet with the RoS, to discuss the issue at hand and the latest decision which comes three years after what was thought to be an end to the matter.
