MH17: Remembering his cousin through his artwork

A cousin of an MH17 victim says the paintings by Muhammad Afif Tambi, who perished in the ill-fated Malaysia Airlines flight, may have been a premonition.

PUTRAJAYA: The blonde woman in the painting stares at the silhouette of the plane jetting across the blue dome, her bright yellow hair blowing in the wind.

The plane must have just taken off, which could explain the red and white streaks it left in its wake.

The painting by Muhammad Afif Tambi – who was killed, along with his parents and two siblings, when MH17 was shot down three years ago – is one of the many artworks by the talented Sarawakian.

He loved art, and the painting of the blonde woman by the 19-year-old student was one of the pieces he had apparently produced two months before his fateful trip.

The painting was discovered by his relatives in his house in Kuala Lumpur a week after the tragedy.

His other artwork is of a man in a brown long sleeve shirt who looks like he is sky diving, with his arms outstretched as he free falls.

“Maybe it was a premonition,” Afif’s cousin Anwar Zafran Zamzuri told reporters after attending the memorial for flight MH17 here yesterday.

But Afif’s passion also gave Anwar and the other relatives an idea of how best to remember him and his family.

They decided to produce tee-shirts with the paintings printed on them.

And whatever proceeds they make from the sale will be donated to the Al-Gazali surau, which is currently being built in Kuching, Sarawak.

Yesterday, the families of those who died during the missile attack on MH17 attended a memorial service to mark the third anniversary of the tragedy.

Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai, Malaysia Airlines Bhd chief executive officer Peter Bellew, its chairman Md Nor Md Yusof and members of over 90 other families were present during the memorial at the Putrajaya Marriott Hotel.

A separate memorial service will be held in the Netherlands on July 17, to which all the victims’ families were invited.

Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine while en route to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam on July 17, 2014.

All 298 on board the Boeing 777-200ER airliner were killed.
