KUALA LUMPUR: A major reshuffle is taking place in the police department, following the retirement of several senior officers.

A total of 74 senior police officers are being transfered or promoted. The shakeup comes in the wake of the arrests of a number of police officers for corruption.

On June 11, Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar told the media that the Royal Malaysia Police would carry out a major overhaul of the top posts in all divisions of Bukit Aman Federal Police Headquarters after Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Khalid announced yesterday that police administration department director Commissioner Zulkifli Abdullah was the new director of internal security and public order.

The incumbent, Commissioner Muhammad Sabtu Osman, retired last month, according to a report in The Sun daily.

The director of the integrity and standard compliance department Comm Abdul Ghafar Rajab becomes the new head of the police administration department.

CID director Comm Mohmad Salleh will be moved to head the narcotics crime investigation department (NCID) with the retirement of NCID director Comm Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff next month.

Taking over from Mohmad will be Johor police chief Comm Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd, whose post, in turn, will be taken over by police secretary DCP Mohd Khalil Kader Mohd.

Sarawak police commissioner Mazlan Mansor returns to Selangor, but this time as state police chief. He had previously served as Petaling Jaya police chief and Selangor CID chief. The current Selangor police chief, Abdul Samah Mat, retires this month.

Deputy director of the internal security and public order department DCP Amer Awal will take over as the new Sarawak police commissioner.

Integrity and standard compliance department deputy director Noor Azam Jamaludin moves out of the federal police headquarters to succeed Negri Sembilan police chief DCP Jaafar Mohd Yusof, who retires this month.

Khalid himself is due for mandatory retirement in September.

In May, Khalid had said that a major shakeup of the Melaka police, which was under the spotlight for corrupt practices, was just phase one of the reshuffle.

In June, he said at least 20 members of the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department had been transferred out.
