Rabies: Victims remain in critical condition

A health team is going from house to house to detect cases of dog bites while Veterinary Department is dealing with dog control, says Sarawak health director.

KUCHING: The three children who were reported to be infected with rabies remain in critical condition at Sarawak General Hospital’s intensive care unit.

Sarawak Health director Dr Jamilah Hashim also said the department had not received any report of new cases.

She said a health team had been carrying out active case detection since Thursday (June 29) at the victims’ villages.

“The team is going from house to house to detect cases of dog bites while the Veterinary Department is dealing with dog control,” she said.

The health ministry on Friday confirmed that three children including two siblings from Kampung Paon Sungai Rimu Bakung and Kampung Lebur, Gedong, in Serian District had been infected with rabies and were being treated in the ICU, Sarawak General Hospital.

The siblings are a four-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl while the third victim is a seven-year-old girl.
