She is accused of preventing Islamic religious enforcement officer Siti Nor Jihan Saleh @ Md Ghazali from discharging her duties on April 3, 2016, at the Renaissance Hotel here.
She was charged under Section 186 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of not more than two years or a maximum fine of RM10,000 or both, upon conviction.
Magistrate Ahmad Solihin Abd Wahab fixed bail of RM3,000 in one surety, and set Aug 22 as the next mention date.
Siti Kasim was represented by lawyers Roger Chan and Rajsurian Pillai while deputy public prosecutor Siti Hajar Mohd Ashif appeared for the prosecution.
Also present in the court were Siti’s friends and supporters.
A video of her shouting at Jawi officers, asking if they had a warrant to raid the closed-door event, went viral on social media last year.
It was reported that Siti Kasim had earlier said she was being investigated for alleged obstruction of a public officer and criminal intimidation.
She filed a suit against the government seeking to compel the government to provide the names of the Jawi enforcement officers in the raid. This lawsuit was initiated because Siti Kasim wanted to name them in another lawsuit.
Last Tuesday, the High Court ordered the government to provide Siti Kasim with the names of Jawi officers involved in the April 3 transgender event within two weeks of the date of the judgment (June 13).
Lawyer Surendra Ananth, who is representing Siti in that lawsuit, had said they would contemplate the next course of action after the enforcement officers’ names were given to them.
