In a news report in The Star Online, an employee of SJK (T) Ladang Sungai Wangi, who declined to be named, said the youths were believed to be members of Gang 04, judging by the symbols they spray-painted on the school wall.
The walls were erected to prevent the youths from using the school field as their personal “playground” at night.
“When the walls were erected, the boys hurled profanities at school officials. They felt that we had trampled on their ‘territory’,” The Star Online quoted the employee as saying.
The youths also often left the field littered with beer bottles.
“This has been happening for many years. Areas such as Ladang Sungai Wangi, Kampung Deralik and Taman Nesa are known for problems like gangsterism, drugs and alcohol abuse,” he said.
School authorities are not the only ones at the mercy of these youths. Residents too are fearful of them and choose to keep mum when the youths act unruly.
One resident, who did not want to give his name said it was common for some boys to sit near his house and party all night long with loud music.
“Once, they beat up a man for questioning their antics,” the same resident said, adding that it was believed a sundry shop in the neighbourhood sold cheap liquor to them.
A village headman said the police had done their part by arresting some of the youths. He also said that while some turned a new leaf, others remained as bad hats and wanted to “show their power.”
“I know there were some robbery cases in Taman Nesa and Ladang Sungai Wangi but the residents did not report it to the police because they were afraid things could worsen,” the report quoted the village headman as saying.
