TEMERLOH:
While most Muslims are making final preparations to celebrate Aidilfitri this weekend, 36 families from 20 villages fell into a deep despair after their homes were damaged in a storm yesterday evening.

Most of the houses had their roofs torn off and blown away. The storm also damaged furniture and electrical appliances, and upturned Hari Raya preparations.

Among the areas affected by the storm were Kampung Seberang Temerloh, Kampung Paya Kecik, Kampung Teluk Ira, Kampung Bangau Parit, Kampung Paya Laman, Lanchang and Kampung Paya Mengkuang.

Sufian Saman, 55, said he was in his house with five other family members, including his son, son-in-law and two-year-old grandchild, when the incident occurred at 4.45pm.

“As soon as I heard the strong wind and thunder, I immediately asked all my family members to go into the kitchen.

“In a blink of an eye, the roof of my house was torn off and blown away. The whole family was forced to sleep under the sky last night,” he said when met at what was left of his house in Kampung Baru Belengu here today.

Sufian, who is a rubber tapper, said even their newly-bought Raya clothes were soaked by the rain.

“We have to wash all the Raya clothes as they were soaked by the rain yesterday, but I am grateful that all my family members are safe,” he said.

The predicament of the victims caught the attention of Pahang Umno liaison committee deputy chairman Mohd Sharkar Shamsuddin, who came forward to provide immediate assistance.

Sharkar said aid and assistance in the form of cash and repair of all the damage caused by the storm would be channelled through the Temerloh Umno division’s welfare bureau.

“Our team will be divided into several groups and will repair the houses immediately with the cost to be fully borne by the government. Therefore, do not worry because we will make sure the work is completed before Raya,” he said.
