Seberang Perai Municipal Council member Satees Muniandy said the campaign was held in Seberang Jaya and Bagan Dalam in mainland Penang over the past two weeks.
He said according to the caller, at a Malaysia Hindu Sangam meeting held on Sunday, the voters were told to bring their ICs to change their voting constituency from Seberang Jaya to Perai.
Satees, in his police report, claimed the campaign was to increase voters for Barisan Nasional (BN) and MIC. Perai, a former traditional MIC seat, has been held by DAP since 2008.
Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy holds the Perai seat.
Satees claimed RM50 had been paid as a reward to those who brought their identity cards to facilitate the transfer of names to Perai.
“… this was related to me by a person by the name of Sumi, who called me yesterday,” Satees’ police report read. He showed the report to the press today.
Satees said a week earlier, a woman senior citizen had come to the Perai DAP office to complain about “MIC and Malaysia Hindu Sangam people” collecting ICs at the Bagan Dalam constituency.
He alleged that their voting constituencies had also been changed to Perai. Bagan Dalam is also held by DAP.
He called on the police to investigate MIC, the Malaysia Hindu Sangam, the National Registration Department and the Election Commission (EC) to find out who has resorted to manipulating the voters’ roll in Perai and Bagan Dalam.
Central Seberang Perai police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid confirmed that the report had been received.
EC chairman Mohd Hashim Abdullah has been given a copy of the police report but has yet to reply to requests for comment.
Malaysia Hindu Sangam president Mohan Shan strongly denied involvement in such a campaign, calling it “lies”.
Mohan said Satees had an “ulterior agenda”.
“Their report has tarnished the Hindu Sangam’s name and we want them to explain in 48 hours. We will be filing a police report on this,” Mohan told FMT.
MIC treasurer-general S Vell Paari denied Satees’ claim, saying it was election propaganda.
“Since they made a report, let the police investigate since they know they will lose Perai to MIC this time.
“They are already preparing for the loss so that after the election they can give this as an excuse for their loss.”
