This is to prevent trespassing by militants following clashes between Philippine security forces and IS-affiliated terrorists in Marawi, Mindanao, said its director, DCP Wan Abdul Bari Wan Kadir.
The clashes between the Philippine security forces and the Maute-group terrorists in Marawi City have entered the third week and caused security concerns in the east coast of Sabah.
“Our marine police have had joint patrols with its Philippine counterpart,” Bari told reporters after a ceremony for Sabah chief minister Musa Aman to hand over Raya goodies to security forces here today.
“So far, there are no less than 15 rendezvous points at sea between our marine police and those from the Philippines. This allows exchange of information to coordinate our operations.
“Only through such coordination can we stop intruders coming into Sabah.
“This in ongoing and we’ve held meetings five times with them. The first one took place in January and we have had two meetings so far this month in Lahad Datu and Kudat.
“Our meetings were not only with the Philippines but also with Indonesia. We need to show our presence there as well.
“We will have more meetings from time to time as the need arises. We are monitoring the situation in Marawi every day to ensure there’s no spillover effect (from the troubled area into Sabah).”
Bari was also happy with the help received from the Royal Malaysian Navy in securing the waters off Sabah’s east coast.
“We have good cooperation with other security forces in Sabah.
“The presence of 15 big Royal Malaysian Navy ships in Sabah waters helps prevent trespassing. The ships serve as a deterrent.
“On land, we are still continuing joint operations, especially during the festive season.
“So, we’ll not rest on our laurels or give space for outsiders to come here. In fact, we’ll multiply our efforts. So far, our situation remains secure and that’s a good sign for us.”
Meanwhile, Sabah Deputy Commissioner of Police Razarudin Husain said there was no information on trespassers in Sabah.
“There’s no information on that and we’re making sure there’s no trespassing in our waters. We’ll be out there even during the festive season and Aidilfitri. All security personnel will be on duty.”
