It is believed that Shazni was arrested over a protest by the youth and women's wings of Pakatan Harapan parties held at the Election Commission headquarters in Putrajaya.

PETALING JAYA: Police have detained Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) Youth vice-chief Shazni Munir this afternoon, likely over a protest held at the Election Commission’s (EC) headquarters in Putrajaya on May 23.

According to a posting on Amanah’s Facebook page, Shazni was detained at about 12.20pm.

A police spokesperson has confirmed that Shazni has been detained and taken to the Putrajaya district police headquarters.

“He is still at the police station, we will issue a statement when we are done questioning him,” the spokesperson was quoted as saying by Malaysiakini.

A posting on the Facebook page said three police officers arrived at noon and arrested the youth leader under Section 341 of the Penal Code although Shazni had informed the party that police would be coming to Wisma Amanah Negara in Kuala Lumpur to record his statement.

Section 341 concerns wrongful restraint, and those found guilty are liable to a prison term which may extend to one month, a fine of RM1,000 or both.

On May 23, the youth and women’s wings of Pakatan Harapan parties held a protest at the EC headquarters in Putrajaya, urging the Commission to lift the decision to no longer provide draft electoral rolls.

When no representative from the Commission showed up to meet the group, the protesters chained and locked the gates of the EC headquarters.
