They claim mismanagement and cronyism is prevalent in the opposition party, which was formed in August last year.

PETALING JAYA: More than 1,000 PPBM members in Perak have quit the party effective today, allegedly due to discontentment over president Muhyiddin Yassin’s handling of the organisation.

Bernama reported that they were led by PPBM Ipoh Timur division chief Azrul Suhadi Ahmad Mokhtar and Teluk Intan chief Jemaat Yaacob in handing in their resignation letters.

Azrul said Muhyiddin had failed to resolve conflicts at the national and state levels despite being given a week to do so.

The former state PPBM chief registrar said he was disappointed that nothing was done after he had reminded the former deputy prime minister that a mass resignation of members would have a negative effect on the party’s image and credibility.

“We want to remind PPBM leaders to reflect on this (mass resignation) and not point fingers on what has happened,” he said at a press conference in Ipoh today.

Accusing Muhyiddin of ignoring certain incidents that had occurred in the party, he said more members were certain to leave in due course.

He said those who have left had been with PPBM since the early stages of its formation in August last year, and had contributed to its growth by helping to set up branches.

Pasir Salak division coordinator Mohamad Hasan said he was quitting voluntarily without being pressured by anyone to do so.

He claimed that cronyism was rife in PPBM and had contributed to its members feeling disillusioned.

“The president places his own people in certain high posts in PPBM, even though in front of us he preaches about the importance of integrity, discipline and unity as the main pillars to advance the party,” he said.

On May 20, Azrul had demanded Muhyiddin’s resignation after the majority of 24 divisions in the state reportedly held him responsible for the party’s problems.

In early April, some 500 Rembau PPBM members quit the party, claiming they had lost confidence in the leadership of Muhyiddin and deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir.

Following this, supreme council member Kamarulazman Habibur Rahman also resigned, claiming that PPBM’s direction had been hijacked by former Umno members looking solely for power and position.

On May 22, PPBM chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he believed that those who had called on Muhyiddin to leave or be expelled wanted PPBM’s effort to defeat Barisan Nasional (BN) in the 14th general election (GE14) to fail.
