PETALING JAYA: The outstanding skills of Leonard Siaw Quan Cheng that earned him the top spot in a street art competition, will see the young Malaysian headed to Melbourne, Australia to participate in an art festival there.

The aspiring street artist clinched first prize in the just-concluded Make Your Mark in Melbourne competition, held live at The Square in Publika, The Star reported.

Siaw’s wining prize is the chance to collaborate with Juddy Roller Studios in Melbourne and Shaun Hossack. He will also contribute a piece of his own artwork to the Wall to Wall Festival Benalla 2018 held in Victoria.

According to The Star, the festival is headed by Hossack, and presented by Roller and is Victoria’s first annual regional street art festival.

“We are honoured to be included in the Make your Mark on Melbourne programme. The artistic scene in Kuala Lumpur is obviously thriving, as reflected by the level of quality of entries submitted.

“We can’t wait to see more Malaysian talents making their mark at the Wall to Wall Festival,” the English daily quoted Hossack as saying. Hossack is also the Wall to Wall Festival’s artistic director.

“I am excited to welcome the winner of this competition to the Wall to Wall Festival Benalla 2018 to skill up, take in new work, and get up-close-and-personal with some of Australian street art’s biggest names,” he added.

Siaw, who was among the ten shortlisted artists in the Make Your Mark in Melbourne competition, had four days to create his masterpiece live at The Square.

Contestants were chosen by members of the public who voted for their favourite pieces. However a panel of judges made the final decision after reviewing all entries.

The works of art will be on display for public viewing until end of May, The Star reported, as well as a photo contest that is now in progress. Members of the public are invited to participate by taking creative snapshots against the backdrop of the artwork. Snapshots should be uploaded on Facebook with the hashtag #visitmelbourne.
