PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) has fixed July 4 for polling in the by-election for the Pujut state seat in Sarawak. Nomination of candidates is on June 20.

EC chairman Mohd Hashim Abdullah announced the dates at a media conference at its headquarters here today after a meeting of the commission.

Following the dismissal of Ting, a by-election must be held within 60 days from May 12 when the seat was declared vacant.

Ting lost his seat in the assembly in a 70-10 vote in favour of a ministerial motion to disqualify him for having once acquired Australian citizenship although he subsequently renounced it.

DAP has said the party would challenge the disqualification in court.

Ting won the Pujut seat with 8,899 votes in the state elections held in May last year. He defeated Barisan Nasional’s candidate Hii King Chiong who obtained 7,140 votes, and PAS’s Jofri Jaraiee as well as independent Fong Pau Teck.

There are 20,070 registered voters in the constituency.

Five schools would be used as polling centres in the by-election, said Mohd Hashim, adding that the EC expected to spend RM838,536 on it

On DAP’s plan to take legal action, he said the EC would abide by the decision of the court.

“We are just carrying out our duty. If the court says (Ting) can retain the seat, we will let him do so.”
