NGO wants David Teo to make televised public apology

PETALING JAYA: Several NGOs today demanded that film producer David Teo make a televised public apology, among others, for the ruckus he caused at last night’s National Transformation 2050 (TN50) dialogue with the entertainment industry.

Gerakan Memartabatkan Pejuang Negara (GMPN) president Razali Zakaria said this was because Teo had acted rudely during the programme that featured Prime Minister Najib Razak.

“The prime minister represents all Malaysians. We do not want this incident to happen again at another TN50 event.

“Action has to be taken against Teo so it can serve as a lesson to everyone, regardless of their religion.

“Don’t be rude to the prime minister, especially during an official event,” he said at a press conference in front of Metrowealth (MIG) headquarters here.

Earlier today, an invite was sent to the media claiming that a peaceful gathering would be held by several NGOs at Teo’s MIG headquarters.

However, only six people showed up.

Razali claimed he had only planned to hold a press conference.

He told reporters that Teo had three days to publicly apologise for the incident that took place in Seri Perdana, Putrajaya.

If Teo fails to comply with his request, Razali would head to the communications and multimedia ministry and demand for appropriate action to be taken against Teo.

“The ministry has to take action regardless of who he is. I don’t know who David Teo is, but when he has been rude, action must be taken.”

He then called on the defence ministry to strip Teo of his honorary major rank.

“I’m a major. It took me years to earn the title. It’s not easy to get the title, so we have to take care of our image.

“If he has been rude, the defence ministry should take back the title.”

The incident took place between Teo and actor Sulaiman Yassin, more popularly known as Mat Over.

Teo had criticised the session’s moderator, Rosyam Nor, for allegedly overlooking those seated at the back when it came to asking questions or speaking.

At this point, Sulaiman was said to have rushed over and suddenly slapped Teo in front of Najib and Rosyam. Security officials quickly escorted both Teo and Sulaiman from the venue.

Meanwhile, Persatuan Seniman Malaysia president Zed Zaidi told “outsiders” not to interfere in the matter.

“We have resolved the problem professionally and swiftly. Outsiders shouldn’t play up this matter any more.

“To me, there is no need to talk about this incident. Teo and Mat Over had already shaken hands in front of the prime minister,” he told FMT.

He also denied claims that Sulaiman and Teo were forced to shake hands in front of the PM, saying they did it with an open heart.

“I myself had met and calmed both Teo and Sulaiman. They accepted and forgave each other sincerely.”

However, Sulaiman appeared to remain unapologetic about his action. He told NST that he was attempting to instil “manners” in Teo by slapping him.

“I don’t think what I did was too extreme. It was done to teach him some manners.

“I have no regrets as David’s attitude was disrespectful towards the prime minister and Rosyam Nor as the moderator. As a Malaysian, we should by right have manners and respect.”

Immediately after the incident last night at a hall in Seri Perdana, Putrajaya, Rosyam said he was embarrassed by the incident and apologised to Najib personally.

Teo said he was not planning any legal action against Sulaiman and had already forgiven the actor for the incident.
