PETALING JAYA: Two DAP politicians said they are willing to “school” Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor and other politicians on how to respect the opposite gender.

Subang Jaya assemblyperson Hannah Yeoh said the party’s women’s wing could provide lessons to politicians fond of making degrading remarks about women on how to safeguard women’s rights.

“Just give us a date when you are free,” she told FMT.

Batu Kawan MP Kasthuri Patto added that DAP’s women’s wing had a strong women’s team to coach the minister and other “repeat offenders”.

“DAP and the Penang Women’s Development Corporation can provide classes to these gentlemen on gender sensitivity and equality.”

The politicians were commenting on Tengku Adnan’s remarks made during a National Transformation 2050 (TN50) forum last night.

The senior minister had said women should dress “shabbily” when they go out to avoid being harassed.

He was responding to a question from a forum participant, who expressed her fear on public safety when she went out.

Kasthuri said it was a shame when women were humiliated during a forum that was meant to talk about the attributes of a developed nation.

“How are we supposed to be fully developed when people still have such a backward and misogynic mindset?”

She said nobody should tell a woman how she should dress.

“It is a form of suppression when women are told how to dress. We have our own rights.”

Another DAP assemblyperson, Yeo Bee Yin, said Ku Nan needed to apologise to the public for insulting women publicly.

“It is unbelievable for a minister to say such things.

“As a leader, he should act as a role model. If he cannot do so, he should resign.”

Yeoh also advised women to be the game-changers in public policy to have their rights protected.

“This shows there is greater urgency for women to rise up and enter politics and be part of policy-making.”
