Lim posed this question to Kamarul based on the Universiti Utara Malaysia lecturer’s shock at finding that the autobiography “Becoming Hannah” contained parables and excerpts from the Bible, which he alleged were attempts to persuade, influence or incite non-Christians, including Muslims, to embrace or become inclined towards Christianity.
Picking up on Kamarul’s line of argument, Lim asked, “Will Kamarul make a police report when his students say ‘Oh my God!’ to his face?
“Or will he make a series of police reports in December when he listens to Christmas songs on the radio or on TV?”
Lim said Kamarul’s police report against Yeoh “insulted the wisdom” of Malaysians because Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and other non-Christians in the country were not inclined to convert to Christianity just by reading her book.
Rather than being an instrument to “persuade, influence or incite non-Christians including Muslims to embrace Christianity”, Lim argued that Yeoh’s book was merely an autobiography, detailing the author’s personal life’s journey.
Lim also pointed to the onslaught of ridicule Kamarul was now facing from social media users, many of whom were stumped at how the UUM lecturer could think like an “an extremist” and be so “narrow-minded”.
He said Kamarul’s decision to lodge a police report against Yeoh had thrown a bad light on all local educators as well. He also demanded that the lecturer be “sensible” and retract his police report.
“Kamarul should now conduct himself in a sensible and noble manner by retracting his police report immediately and apologising to Hannah unreservedly,” Lim said.
On May 15, Yeoh, who is Selangor speaker and Subang Jaya assemblyperson, lodged a police report against Kamarul over an essay he wrote about her that she claimed was defamatory in nature.
The essay titled “Hannah Yeoh contoh hipokrasi terbesar DAP” (“Hannah Yeoh is the biggest hypocrite in DAP”), which Kamarul uploaded on his Facebook page, alleged that the DAP politician had mixed politics with her Christian faith when she wrote her autobiography.
