Don’t use royalty as cover, Ibrahim Ali tells PAS excos

KUALA LUMPUR:
Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali has advised PAS not to talk “in circles” by claiming that only the Sultan of Selangor can direct its three state executive councillors to step down from their posts.

He said the three exco men — Iskandar Samad, Ahmad Yunus Hairi and Zaidy Abdul Talib — must have the courage to quit if they wanted their party’s honour to be viewed in a good light.

“The three executive councillors should resign without any need to dilly-dally by saying they are keeping their posts because of the people’s mandate.

“Do not use the institution of royalty as your cover,” he added at a press conference at the Perkasa headquarters here today.

“How can it be possible to live in the same house after divorcing? This has become political khalwat (illicit close proximity).”

On May 11, PAS’ Syura Council endorsed the decision of the party’s muktamar (general assembly) on April 30 to end its “tahaluf siyasi” (political cooperation) with PKR.

This led to calls for the resignation of the PAS assemblymen in the executive council, which is led by Menteri Besar Azmin Ali, the PKR deputy president.

At another press conference earlier today, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the excos would not budge unless they were directed to do so by Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

He said they would ignore any such order from Azmin as they had been appointed to their posts and were performing their duties with the consent of the Selangor sultan.

Takiyuddin also claimed the party had made their stand based on the Federal Constitution and state laws.

On May 13, Azmin’s political secretary Mat Suhaimi Shafie denied a report that Azmin had requested the three PAS assemblymen to step down from the council.

He told FMT the media report on Azmin telling the trio to resign was inaccurate and a “spin”.

Suhaimi said Azmin made a clear stand that the current executive council line-up would be retained until the upcoming 14th general election (GE14) which was due by the middle of next year.

Ibrahim however said PAS’ decision to end the “tahaluf siyasi” with PKR showed that the two parties were not in sync.

“I believe if the PAS members step down, the party and its sense of honour will be held in high regard.

“Anything other than that will be assessed by the people themselves. There is no need to dilly-dally.”

PAS also has numerous members as councillors in Selangor’s municipal and city councils, with Mohd Shafie Ngah as deputy speaker of the state assembly.
