In a statement today, he said he had sent a letter to PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and the party’s division chief, informing them of his decision.
He said he remained committed to PKR and would return to active duty upon acquittal of the charges against him.
On April 21, Adam was charged with six counts of giving false statements to the authorities.
He was charged under Sections 32(8)(c) and 89 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act for providing forged documents as valid documents and giving false evidence.
The maximum custodial sentence under the anti-money laundering law is five years’ jail, a RM3 million fine, or both.
He was first arrested on April 13 for investigation into his “unusual” wealth, which came to public knowledge after Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Md Yunos claimed that Adam owned a bungalow and a number of luxury cars, despite having held a post in PKR for only one term.
Adam denied any wrongdoing and said his wealth had come from business ventures and an inheritance.
However, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) seized Adam’s RM1.2 million castle-styled bungalow and five luxury cars.
His bank account, and that of his wife’s, which contained over RM212,000, were also frozen.
In his statement today, Adam said the charges levelled against him were “entirely baseless and without substance”.
“I have stated in court that I am innocent, when the charges were read out to me, and I intend to fight these charges to the very end.”
Adam added, however, that he was disappointed with the remarks of PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli, which he said suggested he was guilty of the charges against him.
“He (Rafizi) showed no respect for the principle that a person is innocent till proven guilty, and his comments were totally inappropriate since the case against me is still pending in court.
“His rant against me is malicious and motivated by an improper agenda,” Adam said.
On April 25, Rafizi said PKR should not take the charges against Adam lightly as it would reflect badly on the party and be exploited by PAS and Umno.
“If this is not managed properly, people will say that we only kick up a fuss when others commit a crime, but we keep mum when our own members are involved,” Rafizi said in a press conference.
