GEORGE TOWN: Journalists have a duty to play a bigger role in debunking the “fake news” that seems to be increasing these days, says Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

He said this was more important in view of what he calls “the tirade of lies” being published in newspapers who supported the current ruling Federal government.

Recalling the cordial relations he used to have with English daily New Straits Times (NST), Lim said the newspaper once had “standards” but has changed for the worse over the years.

“We had good friends even among NST reporters. Whatever difference you might have with them, they always had certain standards or red lines they would not cross.

“Now there are no more red lines. Today’s NST is no longer the same, and unfortunately, even The Star is becoming like that,” Lim told reporters at the Penang Hospital today.

Lim said NST and The Star used to have a “sense of fair play” and “stuck to the truth”, despite differences.

“They used to be friends, in fact, we are still friends (with journalists) like (ex-New Straits Times Press boss) Kalimullah Hassan.

“Despite certain disagreements, despite differences, we were still friends. But these days, it is just impossible,” Lim said.

Earlier, Lim and his strategic adviser Saifuddin Nasution Ismail visited a former reporter with The Star, A R Amiruddin, at the hospital.

Amiridduin, 77, underwent surgery on Apr 25 to remove a cancerous tumour in his colon.

He has been warded ever since, with doctors saying he was en route to a speedy recovery.

Lim handed over a cash contribution to Amiruddin, while Saifuddin held a short prayer for Amiruddin’s quick recovery.

Amiruddin is expected to be discharged later today or tomorrow.
