Speaking to FMT, Bukit Aman Anti-Vice, Gambling and Secret Societies Division principal assistant director SAC Rohaimi Md Isa said these were the antics of Form 5 students who had invited their friends to join their group.
He was commenting on reports that police had detained 27 students for involvement in the gang’s activities in Klang.
He said they used the name “Geng 24” because their neighbourhoods were home to some of the gang’s members.
“These school kids don’t involve people from the outside, only friends from school and those who have recently left the school.
“The real Geng 24 are involved in protecting project sites as security guards and entertainment centres as bouncers.
“None of these school kids are doing this yet.”
Rohaimi said the students were allowed to carry the gang’s name only to show that there were many members of the gang in the area, but there was no official recruitment.
“There’s no official membership, no payment fees and no swearing-in for these school kids.”
Rohaimi said Geng 24 had some 600 members across the country.
“The gang’s real leader has already been caught for illegal activities and is currently behind bars in Kajang Prison.”
According to Rohaimi, all secret societies are deemed illegal according to the Societies Act 1966 (Act 335).
