Police chief Comm Chuah Ghee Lye told The Star that the suspect was being traced based on his motorcycle registration number, which was captured by the dashboard camera of a car that had stopped at the pedestrian crossing when the accident took place.
“He (the suspect) should have made a police report within 24 hours of the accident, or else it would become an offence.
“We are now tracing him for questioning,” Chuah was quoted as saying.
Kopitiam operator Foo Swee Wah was hit by the motorcyclist while walking along a pedestrian crossing on Jalan Burma at 10am yesterday. She was rushed to the Penang Hospital with severe head injuries and a broken leg but died several hours later.
In the 12-second video, which has gone viral, the motorcyclist is seen slamming right into Foo as she was nearly halfway across the road.
The impact caused the motorcyclist’s helmet to come undone and roll along the road, but the rider was seen speeding off anyway without stopping to check on the victim.
A witness said the biker was seen earlier swerving in between cars, adding that the man was oblivious to the woman crossing the road ahead of him.
Earlier reports said the case is being investigated for careless and inconsiderate driving under the Road Transport Act 1987.
