KUALA LUMPUR: The human resources ministry has tabled a social security scheme bill for self-employed Malaysians which will make it mandatory for them to contribute to a fund similar to the Social Security Organisation (Socso).

The 67-page Self-Employment Social Security Bill 2017 was tabled at the Dewan Rakyat today.

It seeks to form a self-employment social security scheme to handle funds and distribute benefits to individuals insured under the bill.

It gives 30 different contribution rates based on the selected insured monthly earning. At the lower end, those who earn RM1,050 must contribute RM13.10 monthly. At the higher end, meanwhile, those earning RM3,950 will contribute RM49.40 monthly.

Benefits of contributing to the scheme include occupational disease benefits, temporary disability benefits, permanent disability benefits, dependent benefits, funeral benefits and medical benefits.

Those who do not contribute will be liable to a fine not exceeding RM10,000, imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, or both.
