It currently operates as an artefact trading and performing arts centre, and includes the staging of Asian martial arts display and galleries aside from an educational history tour of the place.
Natural Resources and Environment Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the tenancy of heritage buildings came under the purview of his ministry.
“As the custodian of the site, we wish to clarify the two issues that have been the subject of concern among the public.
“Firstly, on whether the heritage status of the property is under threat as alleged (on social media) and secondly, the alleged improper use of the property,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Wan Junaidi was responding to some allegations circulating on social media that the buildings had been rented to a company from China, and was used as an office and that the heritage status of the Carcosa Seri Negara complex comprising two buildings might be threatened.
According to the minister, Carcosa Seri Negara had previously been operated as a premium hotel but the venture failed for one reason or another.
“Hence, to capitalise on its heritage value, various engagements had taken place with several government agencies to explore the best way to move forward.
“At present, these buildings are not in good condition because they have been abandoned from their previous use as a hotel.
“Thus, through this tenancy agreement, we believe these buildings will be preserved and conserved to reflect the site’s heritage status,” Wan Junaidi said.
He said the company must comply with the policy related to the conservation and preservation of heritage buildings under the National Act 2005 and conditions imposed by the local authorities.
“The tenancy would be terminated immediately if there was any non-compliance with respect to the conditions stated in the offer letter.
“Any renovation and structural alterations which impinged on the heritage building status was not allowed by the government,” Wan Junaidi said.
To further assure that the status of the site remained intact as a national heritage site, Wan Junaidi was also appointed as an honorary adviser by the tenant.
