PETALING JAYA:
The Penang High Court today upheld the decision to acquit former PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu of two criminal defamation charges over remarks on the 1950 communist attack on the Bukit Kepong police station.

Judge Lim Chong Fong maintained the Butterworth Sessions Court’s decision, dismissing the prosecution’s appeal.

“The two charges are defective,” Lim said.

According to reports, the prosecution, led by Penang Prosecution Unit head Razali Che Ani, filed an appeal on July 9, 2015, the day after Mohamad was acquitted by the Sessions Court for the alleged offence.

Mohamad, also known as Mat Sabu, is currently Amanah president. He was charged with defaming policemen and their families who defended themselves in the communist attack on the Bukit Kepong police station in Muar on February 23, 1950.

He was charged with committing the act in a speech at the Pusat Asuhan Tadika Islam Al Fahmi, Markas Tarbiyah PAS Padang Menora, Tasek Gelugor, on Aug 21, 2011.
