Nancy Shukri: More explanation needed on Hadi’s bill

Minister says many states have not been briefed on its details and that the people, especially non-Muslims, have to be told the implications of it clearly.

KUALA LUMPUR: Further explanation of the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (RUU 355) amendment bill is needed as many non-Muslims may not understand it, says Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri.

“I am a Muslim too, but I must remember that for Sarawak, we have a lot of non-Muslims who may not understand this (the bill).

“Therefore, to be fair, we need to explain to the people. We have not even explained the details of the bill.

“How can we support it?” she told reporters at the Dewan Rakyat today.

The Batang Sadong MP was asked about Prime Minister Najib Razak’s announcement last night that the government would not take up PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s bill.

Nancy said she was glad to hear the prime minister’s announcement on the bill.

“I’m glad. For this sort of bill, we need to explain a lot more to the people and the implications of it.

“We would expect this kind of explanation from the authorities, but so far what happened was that it was not really explained in such a way, so it had been spread out as though it is a bad bill.

“To a certain extent they need to amend certain parts of it, like the caning, maybe it is just too much,” she added.

She said further explanation was needed as many states had not been briefed on how the bill would affect them.

“We who are from BN, we don’t want to simply agree or disagree without knowing the details of it.

“So if there’s anything of that sort in the future, we would like to be given more explanation on why the bill is needed, how you (PAS) came up with it.

“As a Muslim, I should say that whatever is good for Muslims, I will support it. But it must be given the right explanation. We must be completely briefed on how it will affect the state,” she said.
