He said the concept of moderation was being considered to be merged into the education syllabus.
“The narrative of the extremist to create hatred is easier (to gain influence) than moderation. It is a challenge,” he said when fielding questions in the Dewan Rakyat this morning.
He said this was why it was crucial for the government and the opposition to be on the same page to promote moderation in the country.
The Pekan MP said that the biggest challenge in promoting moderation was the ease with which hatred was spread.
“Hatred is an emotion, a state of mind that is easier (to spread) than moderation,” he said.
Najib was responding to a supplementary question from Dr Nik Mazian Nik Mohamad (PAS-Pasir Puteh) who said even though the concept of moderation was promoted there was still hatred being spread. Nik Mazlan wanted to know the efforts taken by the government to curb extremist thinking.
Najib said the government was also looking at promoting moderation by including experts of non-Muslim faiths to spread the concept among Malaysians.
“Each faith has its own universal values. Other faith leaders should also come forward,” he said in his reply to Othman Abdul (Umno-Pendang), who asked if the concept of moderation or ‘wasatiyyah’ will involve experts of Confucianism, Hinduism and Christianity.
