PETALING JAYA: Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed says the ministry will review the standard operating procedures of all government agencies issued with weapons to ensure guns do not end up in the wrong hands.

“We need to get the guns monitored. When I was in the Public Accounts Committee, we discovered that the police were still using the manual system for keeping tabs of their weapons.

“Now, they are doing it via an online system,” he told The Star after an event at Bukit Indah yesterday.

According to the report, Nur Jazlan said this was to tackle the issue of stolen or missing weapons in the country.

He said this following confirmation from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) yesterday that 26 shotguns belonging to the Volunteer Department of Malaysia (Rela) were missing as of early this month.

Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said 11 of the weapons had so far been found and 12 people detained. The 12, including a Rela member, were suspected to be involved in the sale of Rela firearms.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the government had set up a special task force to implement a number of immediate measures to improve Rela firearms management.

With this task force, the Rela weaponry secretariat would be implementing new standards that must be adhered to by Rela officers and members in the use of its firearms, Bernama reported.

“We have also set up a firearms inspectorate team at the Malaysia Rela office, done overall checks on the firearms and improved the procedure in the taking out of firearms,” Zahid said.

He added that the post of Armoury Unit officer would be created to safeguard and manage all matters pertaining to Rela’s firearms in a more efficient and transparent manner.
