PETALING JAYA:
The opposition will lose and Pakatan Harapan (PH) will be crippled if Prime Minister Najib Razak calls for a snap election now, former minister Zainuddin Maidin says.

He said this was because PH had not convinced the people that it was a viable alternative to Barisan Nasional (BN), and its house was still not in order.

In his latest blog post, Zainuddin, popularly known as Zam, claimed DAP was fraught with “disunity, scandal and corruption”, while PKR was at loggerheads with PAS despite the two parties administering Selangor.

Amanah, the former information minister said, had failed to become a replacement for PAS, while Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) had become too identified with former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

PKR, DAP, Amanah and PPBM are part of PH.

On the other hand, Zam said, Najib had yet to win over the people despite introducing a plethora of projects as the “rakyat” were more concerned about the cost of living, a factor he said could lead to the prime minister’s downfall.

Zam said surveys showed the people would reject Najib’s leadership, despite him bringing in a host of projects from Saudi Arabia and China.

However he said this did not mean the people would reject BN as they did not see PH as an alternative.

Zam said the Umno president had only one more magic trick up his sleeve – to call for a snap election because if this were to happen, PH would find itself trapped and it would struggle.

The former Utusan Malaysia group-editor-in-chief said while the ruling coalition itself was not fully prepared for snap polls, the BN and government machinery would be able to do the needful immediately.

To inspire confidence in the people, Zam suggested the PH unveil a shadow cabinet that would include the likes of PPBM’s Mukhriz Mahathir, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali, DAP’s Tony Pua and Amanah’s Husam Musa.

The opposition coalition, he argued, would be able to come off as a more convincing front if it were to do this.

Presenting young faces in the shadow cabinet would have an immense impact by boosting the people’s confidence that they could not only get rid of Najib but also change the old faces in the current cabinet.

Mahathir, Zainuddin said, should also contest in the 14th general election even though he did not want to be the prime minister. He said the people were not tired of Mahathir yet.
