‘Wrong way’ teen driver pleads not guilty to driving under influence

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The teen who drove against the flow of traffic along the North-South Expressway two weeks ago was charged with driving under the influence at the Magistrate’s Court here today.

In a very loud voice, Ng Pei Ven, 19, pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Jamaliah Abd Manap after a court interpreter read the charge to her in Mandarin.

The teen was charged with driving under the influence of drugs which caused the death of Mohamad Fandi Rosli, 26, at KM 134 of the NSE.

Ng is charged with committing the offence under Section 44 (1) (a) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which carries a jail term between three and 10 years or a fine between RM8,000 and RM20,000 or both.

The case is being prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Razali Che Ani while Ng is represented by Parmjit Singh.

Telling the court that the chemist’s report on the case was still pending, Razali requested RM10,000 for bail but Parmjit appealed for a lower bail as Ng was only a 19-year-old with learning disabilities.

Magistrate Jamaliah set bail at RM7,000 with two sureties and fixed May 12 for mention.

Last Friday, Ng pleaded not guilty to a charge of substance abuse in the same court.
