KULAI: Former Teluk Intan DAP chief Hew Kuan Yau was today remanded for four days to facilitate investigations into a social media posting that allegedly mocked Prime Minister Najib Razak.

According to a Bernama report, police obtained the remand order through magistrate Ahmad Farid Ahmad Kamal.

Hew, 46, dubbed ‘Superman’, arrived at the Kulai Magistrate’s Court in Johor at 8.20am wearing the purple lockup uniform.

He was met by his lawyer Chan Kheng Fai and DAP members including Senai assemblyman Wong Shu Qi, Johor Jaya assemblyman Liow Cai Tung, Pengkalan Rinting assemblyman Cheo Yee How and Pekan Nanas assemblyman Yeo Tung Siong, Bernama reported

Hew was arrested at the Comic Cultural Museum premise in Komtar where he works at about 1.20pm yesterday, for his Facebook post lampooning the prime minister and his wife Rosmah Mansor by comparing them to the two main characters in new Disney movie Beauty and the Beast.

He was detained at the George Town district headquarters at Patani Road here before being brought to Johor this morning.

Meanwhile DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng expressed sympathy for Hew.

“The imposition of a four-day remand order would be seen as a form of pre-emptive punishment towards Hew when investigation towards his 1 line post on Facebook can be wrapped up in less than a day,” the Penang chief minister said in a statement today.

“Even though we may not agree with what he has written, it should not justify the four-day remand order,” he said.

“Such an offence under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for insulting the Prime Minister and his wife cannot be so severe until he has to be remanded four days,” he said.
