Watching a movie in Terengganu? You’re being watched

Moviegoers at Terengganu's only cinema need to mind their manners as they are being monitored by CCTV.

PETALING JAYA: The 20-year wait for a cinema to open in Terengganu is over, but the Lotus Five Star (LFS) in the state’s capital is no ordinary movie theatre.

The cinema’s viewing halls are equipped with closed-circuit television (CCTV) so that the public can monitor the actions of moviegoers.

According to a Sin Chew Daily report, LFS business development and project manager Mohamad Shah Abdul Aziz said the CCTV initiative was to prevent illicit activities as the company understood that local authorities were concerned about such behaviour in the dark.

But Shah said there would be no segregation of male and female moviegoers, and that lights would not be turned on while films were being screened.

“Our CCTVs can record what is happening in the dark clearly. So if anyone is acting obscenely, their actions will be recorded and we believe this can allay the fears of the authorities and certain individuals.”

He added that in line with conditions set by the Kuala Terengganu City Council (MBKT), the last movie screened would end before 1am, except on Thursdays when the cinema would close at 6pm and reopen only at 3pm on Friday.

Shah also said during the month of Ramadan, MBKT required the cinema to halt all screenings from 6pm to 9pm.

For important dates in Islam, such as Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Hari Raya Haji and Prophet Muhammad’s birthday, the cinema can only operate until 6pm and reopen the next day at 2pm.

To fulfil the needs of Muslim moviegoers, Shah said LFS had, for the first time, built prayer rooms in the cinema, aside from nursing rooms and diaper-changing rooms.

The LFS cinema in Terengganu was officially opened on Saturday. Its largest viewing hall can accommodate some 250 viewers.

Only six of the cinema’s 11 halls are currently operational, with another five still under construction.
