PETALING JAYA:
It was all in the name of duty for a policeman who broke his left leg after a suspect rammed into him in a desperate attempt to escape arrest.

In the incident which took place on the Pasir Gudang Highway, Kpl Johar Bagini was said to be redirecting traffic to help a patrolling unit detain the suspect, The Star said.

According to the report, police had chased the man from Jalan Perak in Pasir Gudang. By the time he hit the highway, the 30-year-old was speeding and driving recklessly. He then crashed into the traffic roadblock, hitting Johar, The Star said.

“He got down and charged towards the officer (Johar), wielding an iron rod, and this forced the officer to fire a shot near his hips,” Seri Alam OCPD Supt Jokhiri Abd Aziz said in a statement quoted by the daily.

The dramatic event came to an end when police managed to detain the suspect who had tried to escape down the corridor of a nearby bank, the report said.

According to The Star, the case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.
